QUR’AN
The curriculum for Qur’an has two components to it; firstly, the skill of learning to read Arabic with the correct makhaarij and in older years this will include learning rules of tajweed; and secondly hifdh.
Whilst we have previously stressed that time constraints at ILC do not allow us to take a student through a completion of reading the whole Qur’an we have listened to the needs of the community and adapted the syllabus so that we can do so within 5 years, but this cannot be done without the help of the parents by ensuring homework is completed. We aim to equip students with the skill of reading, knowledge of tajweed and a love to engage with the Qur’an in-Sa’Allaah. Both these components of reading skills and hifdh are important in all classes from year one up to the senior classes.
Older students have a syllabus that caters to more advanced topics of tajweed along with hifdh. All students are taught at their own pace and given their own targets; some are able to continue at a faster pace whilst some students learn at a slower pace. Out of school recitation is essential to good progress and we encourage parents to instill a habit of regular recitation.
QUR’ANIC ARABIC
It has been widely perceived that the impetus of non-Arabic speakers to learn Arabic is predominantly with the intention of understanding the Qur’an.
To this end for non–Arabic speakers we have introduced Qur’an Arabic – the focus of which will be to teach Arabic exclusively to enable understanding of the Qur’an and Salah.
We have based our syllabus on a course run worldwide by the Understand the Quran Academy founded by Dr Abdul Aziz. - http://understandquran.com.
Over a four-year period after reception children would have learnt Arabic to enable understanding of 70% of the vocabulary of the Qur’an as well as the adhkars that go with salah. In-Sha Allaah they will be able to understand Salah in its entirety when using the common surah’s.
ISLAMIC STUDIES
The aim of Islamic Studies is to teach the correct knowledge of Islam according to the Qur’an and Sunnah. We endeavor to create the love of Islam within all students and enable them to implement what they have learnt within their everyday lives. Different aspects of Islamic Studies topics are covered in a structured curriculum. This way the students build their knowledge and understanding term by term, year by year. We endeavor to relate teachings to the current challenges the student may be going through so classes are age specific so that an appropriate approach can be utilised. We bring alive some of the aspects such Sadaqah by actively involving students in charity effort.
We also hope to bring in experts to help address current issues impacting our youth e.g. Islamophobia in schools.
IQRA ARAB
The Iqra Arab wing was created to meet the demands of Arab parents to teach their children in Arabic. It also allowed a more focused approach for our non-Arab students. A dedicated syllabus was created for them covering the above topics. More details can be provided by the Deputy Head of the Arab department.
